A history in six committees

IFMSA grew committee by committee. Each standing committee owns a field of global health, and each has its own story, founding year and, for some, a trail of name changes. Here is how they came to be.

1951

IFMSA is founded

The International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations is founded in Copenhagen in May 1951, one of the many international student organisations set up to rebuild cross-border cooperation in the wake of the Second World War. Nine European medical students’ associations (Denmark, England, Austria, West Germany, Finland, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands and Switzerland) came together around a simple goal: to connect medical students across borders, empower them, and improve the world from a medical perspective. Student exchange became the federation’s founding pillar. From the start the work was organised through standing committees, each owning a field of global health, and they were not all born at once: IFMSA grew committee by committee over the following four decades.

Standing Committee on Professional Exchange

IFMSA’s very first standing committee, born with the federation itself. It started with just 8 European countries; by 1952 already 463 students had completed a clinical placement abroad. Today it is one of the largest student-run exchange programmes in the world (roughly 13,000 students a year across 100+ National Member Organisations) and is called the backbone of the federation, its longest-running project.

Standing Committee on Medical Education

Also one of IFMSA’s original 1951 committees. From the start it has been the forum where medical students act as full stakeholders in their own education, reforming curricula, training educators, and carrying the student voice into medical-education systems as the first quality-check of their own training.

Standing Committee on Public Health

Founded by students determined to prevent ill-health and shape policy. Its focus widened over six decades from students’ own health to global public health: prevention, health promotion, and health-policy advocacy on issues from antimicrobial resistance to climate and mental health.

SCORP

Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace

Founded as the global refugee crisis came into the spotlight. Members soon realised relief alone was not enough: sustainable solutions meant addressing the root causes of conflict and human-rights abuses. Today it empowers students to promote and protect human rights, peace, refugee health, medical ethics and humanitarian aid.

SCORE

Standing Committee on Research Exchange

The research counterpart to SCOPE, created to give future physicians an international research clerkship: basic-lab, clinical, or global-action projects. It now connects 65+ National Member Organisations and over 3,000 research projects, placing more than 2,400 students a year, each entirely coordinated by student volunteers.

SCORA

Standing Committee on Sexual & Reproductive Health and Rights incl. HIV & AIDS

Founded out of a will to act on HIV, sexually transmitted infections, and the stigma around them, supporting people living with HIV/AIDS. Its scope grew to cover comprehensive sexuality education, maternal health, gender and gender-based violence. Its members are known as “SCORAngels”.

Beyond the committees

The support divisions

The six standing committees own IFMSA’s health fields. Carrying them is a second set of portfolios: the support divisions, each led by a Vice-President, that keep the federation running.

VPA

Activities & Programs

Keeps IFMSA’s Programs from being fleeting initiatives, helping them grow stronger each cycle through organisational development, programme capacity and stronger networks. It also runs the Secretariat, “the administrative and legal backbone of IFMSA”, safeguarding the federation’s governance and compliance.

Capacity Building

Called “the backbone of the federation”. Capacity Building inspires and empowers members through training and development: coordinating trainings, building workshops, engaging trainers and growing the skills and knowledge of IFMSA members across every region.

Public Relations & Communication

“The magic glue that holds our stories together.” PR & Communication shows the world who IFMSA is and what it stands for, managing visual campaigns and written content across platforms to connect and amplify the federation’s voices globally.

External Affairs

Represents IFMSA’s 1.5 million medical students in international decision-making spaces, “where ideas become statements, statements become commitments, and commitments become action”. It coordinates advocacy, policy development and stakeholder engagement to amplify the student voice in global health.

Members

Stewards the federation’s global membership. The Members division supports National Member Organisations in their governance, engagement and collaboration, fostering transparency and inclusivity and keeping IFMSA a sustainable, connected network.

Finance

Safeguards the federation’s finances. Led by the Vice-President for Finance, who also serves as Treasurer, it handles financial management, budgeting and fiscal accountability so the rest of IFMSA’s work can run.
